My blog has moved!

Hey everyone! Thank you very much for reading and following my blog for the past year or so. Since the recent launch of my website markforephotography.com I've been battling Blogger's limited options on designing and incorporating this blog to fit seamlessly within it. That is why I must finally throw in the towel when it comes to blogger and use a wordpress format. So my friends if you are a fan of this blog the new site to view it is, blog.markforephotography.com I have a lot of new and exciting things coming up this year and I can't wait to show you all! Castle Rock Climbing

Yesterday My buddies and I went climbing at Castle Rock. A good day of climbing for sure, I got a few routes but I was more interested in taking pictures for most of the trip. It's really beautiful out there and it's one of the first decent climbing areas I've found in the Bay Area.

An Analog Weekend (expired film)

There is still something a little magical about using film. It really makes you think about your shots especially when your using flash without a meter. I love it and I try to take the initiative and shoot at least a couple rolls a month. I've decided that for all my own personal albums I'm going to take the analog approach. I shoot thousands of frames of digital each month for other people so I've decided than rather loose them in that vast collection, I'll just shoot a few rolls, get them processed and have those prints forever.
Anyways, I had a great time in slo this weekend. I love that city, and I really want to move back when I get a chance.

Well Summer is here! Which usually means one thing for me, working at a camp! I've been working at camps since I've graduated high school and finally after 4 years I'm put in charge of one. And let me tell you being director is awesome. I go to skate parks everyday and teach the little kids the fundamentals. Anyways I'm also taking pictures of the campers for there parents. Here are some portraits of my little shredders.

Petersen Family Photoshoot

The Petersen's are a great family that I have known for years and I was stoked that they wanted me to do a shoot for fathers day for them. Mr. Petersen loves cars and he wanted a shoot showing all of the cars that he has bought for his family. This was a really fun and exciting shoot and I'm stoked to go back soon and shoot his Audi R8 and the Dodge Viper in a more closed studio environment. The shoot started at one due to time constraints so not the most premium of lighting scenario (especially when you don't have any lights) but it was a good and fun challenge coming up with a way to make these cars look great with the limitations placed on me. Anyways here is a few shots from the shoot it was super fun!

I've been coding this site for a few hours everyday for the past couple of weeks and now its finished!!! A huge thanks to Aaron Shegrud and Murray Foster for proofreading/improving on my code couldn't have done it without you! I love this style of photography, it's so simple to set up and has such a dramatic look to it. I really want to eventually get my hands on some hot lights to take some noir style portraiture. Using flashes just wasn't cutting it so I didn't include any of the portraits in the upcoming show.

Day 144: Film Noir

This is one photo of a series I'm working on for my Advanced Photo class. We were allowed to do anything that had to do with the book we read, so I chose the chapter on "Once Upon a Time". Were you use your photography to tell a visual story. I have always been a fan of older films (The Big Sleep, Casablanca, Gilda, The Maltese Falcon, and so on) and I was really trying to capture the "film noir" period with this photo. I had a lot of fun and a HUGE thankyou to Maria who is always a wonderful model.

I'm not updating right now because I feel I'm in a bit of a rut, but as soon as I feel like I've broke out and started creating something more fresh it will be up again. Day 127: First Thursday Galleries

First Thursdays in the city means free gallery day! So me and a few of my friends walked around and saw some great art, then went to the bars. It was a great day! Finally!! I'm shooting outdoors and in the daylight, location shooting is my favorite I just never have a opportunity because I'm at school most of my life. But luckily today I was with friends that indulged me enough to hold my reflector or light when I needed them too. Thanks guys!

5d Mark II VS. Canon G9

I've been challenging myself lately to step away from my nice fancy 5d Mark II and pick up some consumer grade cameras. I can't depend upon always having the right tools to take a picture when I need them. So recently I picked up a Canon G9 point and shoot and I've been having a blast with it. It's almost more freeing than the big slrs besides the fact that the quality of the picture isn't quite as good but you can make it work. The thing I was most excited about with this new little camera is the hot shoe adapter at the top, now I have a camera that can sync at 1/500th of a second with no problem. The only bummer I've noticed so far is the noise is pretty bad on it. Anyways here is two pictures the first taken with the 5d mark II the second with the g9, I say this is a pretty impressive little point and shoot.

I've been treating this 365 project more like a visual diary of my daily life more than anything. Which is fine, but that's not to say that I don't desire make more meaningful and "artistic" photos, or in other words, pictures that have meaning to more than just me.
I've been sketching a lot lately trying to hammer out some cohesive idea's for a book I want to produce, I'm really excited to see these ideas come to flourishion. Most likely this summer.

This is the most stressed I've ever had while shooting, I had the total of 5 Minutes including set-up.(The carnies were tearing everything down around us and I kept on having to move my equipment around, all while trying to take the picture) It was a good excercise working under high-stress shooting like that. But I like to take my time in the shoot to express my thoughts and ideas to the people involved in the shoot. I'm going to try something similar during the summer when the fair is in town.

My good friend Maria. One thing that I'm proud of in my portraiture work is my constant concern of focus, while this might seem obvious to pretty much anyone who has picked up a camera, I am very very very particular of my focus, even down to a almost unnoticeable detail. If you ever got to see any of my full sized photo's you could notice it. Unfortunately any photo hosting site has artificial sharpening and compressing agents to them. But here is a close up of the image below before all that crap.

I've been challenging myself lately to use different camera's besides my 5d mark ii. I know my dslr's in and out now and I need to not depend on them to make a good picture. So my sister gave me her older point and shoot camera last week so I've been using that regularly.
I ended up using hacking software on it so I could shoot raw files on it. But besides that its still a regular camera.

While I was down in SLO for the weekend I decided I really wanted some mountain biking pictures to build on my biking portfolio, so I asked my good friend Curtis to do some riding for me. One interesting thing to know about Curtis is that he was the number 2 down hill mountain biker on the west coast (college league) so he is really fast. I wish I brought my 1d with me instead of the 5d mark ii, the mark ii is definitely NOT a sports camera ( it only sync's at 1/160th)

This was by far one of the most memorable and fun shoots I've ever been a part of. Everyone in my group is an extremely talented photographer and best of all good people to be around. We went through 10 pounds of dry ice in about 2 hours. We completely ruined a backdrop and was soaking wet for half of it but it was AWESOME. We had a little fun with the dry ice at the end and thankfully Zach still has his hand and we have an awesome video as well.

An Update of my Life.

I thought I would document my life at this moment because we are indeed in a time of hardship. The Union is broke, California is BROKE, and things are not looking very bright in the state school system.

I need to focus more than ever on some serious photography and the business that surrounds it. My 365 day thing is "fun" but I really need to actually take some time and make more than snapshots. I'm going to start to build portfolio's around things that I love (biking, climbing, portraiture, and high-fashion photos) I know what a mix right? Because who knows what's going to happen coming in the next couple of years. I got into Cal Poly and I'm considering transferring but I'm not sure that's the right choice. I applied to two universities in Italy (Florence and Torrino) and if I get in there I'm for sure going. (Get the hell out of California while the gettin is good).

I use to make fun of kids that went to private schools, "a waste a money" I use to say. But now that the shit has officially hit the fan, I wish that I went to one. They probably have a better ratio of student to teachers, because right now East Bay fired all the professors that weren't tenured. To give you a better idea of what that looks like, we have 400 communications majors at my school and now they have three teachers. Yeah.

So its time to put all of my effort into learning outside the school system in order to hit the ground running in this industry. I've already contacted several pro photographers to assist for them, nothing too promising yet, but hopefully soon.

Forty four: Mavericks Surf Comp

Today was awesome, I headed out to the Maverick's surf comp with a few buddies to take some pictures. Which if you don't know what Mavericks is, its a surf spot with the biggest waves in the world literally. To give you an idea about what the surf was like that day, a rouge wave came up on shore and hospitalized 15 spectators. It was nuts.

I’m breaking out and trying new and different things in photography and it feels good. The entire process of making this photo was a several day event but well worth the results. It all started out with converting my digital image into a negative.

Through the miracle of photoshop and printers that print on transparencies this wasn’t too difficult. The whole time I was processing the 8x10 negative I was almost laughing to myself thinking about Ansel Adams and the Zone system, because for me to produce the “perfect negative” it took me about 10 minutes, but for him it was days of frustration in the dark room. Anyways, the next step for this photo took me into the darkroom. The lab tech mixed up some UV sensitive cyanotype emulsion which I used to paint and coat some watercolor paper with. That was the first day of work.
The next day was printing. We have a really cool UV printer in the lab, which essentially is more or less a tanning booth made to make photographs. However I went a little more old school, for this print, I brought it out into the sunlight placed the paper on a piece of foam then the negative then a piece of glass making a contact print. About an hour later I brought it in from the sun and washed it and… boom baby cyanotype city. I think next week I might coat an entire bed sheet with the emulsion and print something HUGE, the chemistry is cheap so might as well.

Day Forty- Subtle Light.

In a recent interview of one of my favorite photographers he was asked how you tell if a photo is taken by a professional or not. His answer was simple, the light, "If I look at your photo and can instantly break it down, with what you did and how you did it, it looks amateur." This I noticed is definitely not always the case for all photos but a lot of them. So this is me taking my first step towards a more subtle approach to my lighting.

I think I'm caught in the trap of always using off camera flash, pretty soon I'm going to dedicate a day to natural light. Anyways, this was taken with two flashes and umbrellas uncomfortably close to my face. (The right flash has a blue gel on it.)

What you are seeing here is one exposure taken over about 3 seconds. I put my camera on bulb setting and set up two flashes (one to my left and right) a few inches from my face. I set the flash triggers to two different frequencies that way I could fire them at different times. Soooo here is the actions that followed in order to make this happen.

1.Turn off all the lights in the room.
2.Trigger Camera with remote.
3.Turn right trip flash (flash trigger is in my hand)
4.Turn left, change frequency on the flash remote, trip flash.
5.Remote the camera to close the shutter.
6.Turn on the lights.

And now you know.

This was a really fun day in the studio. My friend Jess invited me over and we just went to town on taking a bunch of really fun pictures. I owe a lot to Jess for providing everything such as the studio space, the projector, slides, and model other wise I may have never had such a cool and unique opportunity to shoot like this. These are my two favorite from the day.

It hasn't stopped raining in quite some time. The other day while arriving at school I reached for my umbrella and realized I forgot it at home. Then the irony kicked in, I had two other umbrellas in my car but neither that were made to keep out rain (photo umbrellas). Anyways that's what I'm holding in my hand. I used some electrical tape to hold the flash up inside it and out of sight, and I have another flash behind me for the rim light. And that was my tuesday.

I had my birthday party yesterday and it was awesome! I took a ton of pictures, but this one caught my eye the most. My flash completely blew out the whole picture, which I use to hate in photos. I went on a walk today to try to clear my head. I’ve been feeling a bit (excuse the expression) bipolar lately. One minute I’m on top of the world hanging out with my friends, the next I start feeling really sad or worried. I’ve been thinking about the future a lot lately and it scares the hell out of me. I think this might be my quarter life crisis kicking in. I have no idea how my life is going to pan out. Part of me is confident things are going to be alright, another part is so scared it keeps me up at night.

My first solo camera repair

Well my Holga is a peace of crap like all Holga's are (but that's why we love them right?) and stopped letting me turn the lens to focus. So I took it apart to investigate, it turns out that the lens was jammed on top of the set screw not letting it turn. But anyways I had fun taking it apart and putting it back together. Here's some pictures. I have a Canon AT-1 that doesn't fire so that's going to be the next adventure to undertake.

There is really nothing quite as satisfying in photography as shooting film. I've gotten in the habit of shooting it more, but I'm still primarily a digital photographer out of convenience. I technically shot these yesterday but I got them developed today for the soul intention for using them for today's post. Even though the film is about 5 years expired and probably has been damaged by freezing it for so long, I like the aesthetic it provides. The first picture is the "official" picture of the day of my good friend Bobby.

This shot was interesting to take, I had to balance four different light sources (a flash, monolight, LED light, and the ambient) which can be tricky. I set the camera on Bulb setting, triggering it with remote, quickly drew the flag post with a LED flashlight then scrambled back to my position you can see me in, used a different remote to trigger the strobes to "freeze frame" myself in the picture then as quickly as i could reached into my pocket to switch back to the camera remote and close the shutter. All this to take a goofy looking picture haha. I eventually want to have some of my friends (who are amazing artist) draw some stuff using led lights, or maybe make a stop motion with led lights. But for now here is day 11.

I decided that putting restrictions on what I can shoot everyday just makes me frustrated and stress about this project. So I'm going to be shooting what I want everyday. k.
