Project 365

2009 was an excellent year. I took my first serious steps to becoming a professional photographer and now with some experience under my belt I'm going to take what I've learned and push myself to be more creative, daring and overall better at this art form.

Here are some of my favorites of 2009

Here's the plan for 2010.

The people on Flickr are awesome and have inspired me to take on a 365 day photo and art project. So be prepared. I hope I am. With school and work this is going to be hard to swing but I think it will be worth it.

The project is as follows.

Weekly theme

Monday-iPhone
Tuesday-Self portrait
Wednesday-Diptych/triptych
Thursday-Photoshop (heavy manipulation)
Friday- Free (pretty much anything I feel like doing, like drawing or video, who knows)
Saturday- Flickr group theme
Sunday-Alternative to DSLR (mostly going to be film but can't promise every time)

I can't promise I'll update everyday, but I'll try my best!

First Time Studio Experience

Today I got an unexpected call from a friend and fellow photographer asking me if I wanted to come over to the studio she works at and play around with some of the equipment, I instantly jumped at the opportunity. I've used some of my friends and schools equipment before but I've never used it in a studio environment. Up until this point my idea of a studio was my garage with my Vivitars and a couple of bed sheets, so this was definitely an upgrade. I was introduced to a some new equipment that I've never seen before that has opened up my mind for some new creative opportunities in the future. When I arrived they were already in the middle of a shoot so I assisted for a bit, offering advice here and there. By the end of that shoot we were almost out of time but here are a few shots I could squeeze in.

A New Aesthetic

Owning a 5D Mark II is amazing let me tell you. However, it has also wanted me to branch out more and more away from digital. This camera is so pristine and when you combine it with some L series lenses the sharpness of the image is out of control. This aesthetic as pretty and clean as it is, sometimes grows tiresome (at least to me). Let me tell you want a huge relief it is to come across someones photo stream on flickr who still uses mostly film and alternative processes. (I sadly am not one of those people for the most part, but I'm trying to push myself to be). Film as many people might think has not entirely been relegated to the past. I still think its superior to digital, just a little bit more of a pain in the ass.
So in attempt to push myself away from habits I've formed in my photographic career so far I went out three days ago and shot a few rolls of film. My film I have is not exactly what you would buy at a store though, its about five years expired and been in the deep freeze for God knows how long. This is the point though, with the combination of this expired film and the scanning techniques I accidentally developed playing around with it, I believe I've stumbled apon a new aesthetic with this film that I haven't really seen elsewhere. So stay tuned for more in the coming weeks.

The FIDM Shoot

When my friend asked me to shoot for her final project at FIDM I was honored. The whole premise of the shoot was based around lifestyle fashion, and her theme she chose androgyny. The whole process was really fun once we got in the swing of things and the final product I think turned out well.

The Christmas Tree

Ever since I've seen this tree I have wanted to take a picture of it, so I decided that this was going to be my year. My original concept for these pictures were for them to be romantic and I am still stuck on that idea so I'm going back in a few weeks for a mock engagement shoot. In the mean time enjoy this little series.
